Why your COD order form matters more in Pakistan

A COD order form on Shopify is the first filter between a real buyer and a parcel that comes back. In Pakistan almost every online order is cash on delivery, so the form is not just a checkout page. It decides whether the rider can find the house, whether the buyer picks up the phone, and whether the order was serious in the first place.

OrderNation's 2026 study of about 170,000 Pakistani orders found that 94.5% were COD and only 1.6% were prepaid digitally. Roughly 1 in 5 shipped parcels (19.4%) came back as RTO, and 37.3% of COD orders were cancelled before shipping, against 2.8% of prepaid orders. In their funnel, 100 COD orders placed became about 63 shipped and about 49 with cash collected.

A form cannot fix all of that. But many cancellations and returns start with one of four things: a wrong number, a vague address, a city the courier does not serve, or a buyer who did not understand the total price. All four are form problems, and this guide fixes them one field at a time.

Which fields should a Pakistani COD order form have?

Baymard Institute's checkout research finds that an average US checkout shows 14.88 form fields by default, while a good flow can work with 7 to 8. A Pakistani COD form can be even shorter, because there is no card number to type. Here is the field list we recommend, with the rule for each one.

FieldRequired?RuleWhy it matters in Pakistan
Full nameYesOne field, not first and last separatelyRiders ask for the person by name at the gate
Mobile numberYesMust start with 03 and have 11 digits; accept +92 and convert itA wrong number means no confirmation and no delivery call
WhatsApp numberOptionalPre-fill with the mobile number and let them change itMany buyers use a different number for WhatsApp
CityYesDropdown or searchable list built from your courier's city listFree-typed cities like Isb, Pindi or Lhr confuse booking
Full addressYesHouse, street, block or sector, area; set a minimum lengthShort addresses are the hardest parcels to deliver
Nearest landmarkOptional but shownMosque, school, shop, chowkRiders find houses by landmarks more than by street numbers
Postal codeHide or optionalNever block the order for itPostal codes have 5 digits but many buyers do not know theirs
EmailOptional or hiddenNever required for CODMany buyers have no email they check
Quantity or bundleYesPre-selected defaultRemoves a step and shows the real total

That leaves six to seven fields the buyer actually types. Everything else is pre-filled, optional, or removed. Every field you delete is one less reason for a buyer on a small phone screen to give up halfway.

How do you validate a Pakistani mobile number?

Pakistani mobile numbers follow the pattern 03XX-XXXXXXX: a leading 0, the mobile code 3, an operator digit, then the rest of the number. Typed the way buyers say it, that is 11 digits. From abroad it is written +92 3XX XXXXXXX, without the 0.

  1. Strip spaces, dashes and brackets before checking anything.
  2. If the number starts with +92 or 0092, replace that part with 0.
  3. If it starts with 3 and has 10 digits, add a 0 in front.
  4. Now require exactly 11 digits starting with 03. Anything else gets a clear message, for example: Please enter your mobile number like 03001234567.
  5. Do not block a valid-looking number just because its prefix is new. Operators add prefixes over time, and the rule of 11 digits starting with 03 is enough.
  6. Show the cleaned number back to the buyer on the thank-you page so they can spot a typo while they are still on your site.

Store the number in one format everywhere, for example 03001234567. Then your courier booking, your WhatsApp confirmation and your customer list all match, and you can easily spot the same number placing five orders in one hour.

Step-by-step: setting up the COD form on Shopify

  1. Turn on cash on delivery. In Shopify, Cash on Delivery (COD) is offered as a manual payment method in the payment provider settings. Shopify marks these orders as unpaid; after the courier sends you the cash, mark the order as paid on its order details page.
  2. Decide where the form lives. A one-page form on the product page, where the buyer stays on the page, fills 6 to 7 fields and taps Order, is the common setup for Pakistani COD stores. RabbitROI's Shopify app is one way to do this: it adds a one-page COD order form with bundles and quantity offers.
  3. Load your courier's city list. Export the list of cities your main courier serves and use exactly those names in the City dropdown. Add common spellings as search words, such as Pindi for Rawalpindi and Isb for Islamabad.
  4. Write helper text under the address field. Example: House 12, Street 4, Block C, Gulshan-e-Iqbal. A good example under the field works better than an error message after they press Order.
  5. Set a minimum address length. An address of a few words, such as Lahore or near the market, is very hard for a rider to find. Ask for more before the order is placed, not after.
  6. Show the total, including delivery, right above the Order button. Write it in rupees, for example: Total Rs 2,850 (including Rs 250 delivery).
  7. Make the thank-you page do work. Show the order number, the cleaned phone number, the address, and one line: We will confirm your order on WhatsApp before dispatch. Please reply to confirm.
  8. Test the whole form on a cheap Android phone on mobile data. Most of your buyers will fill it exactly that way, often on a slow connection.

Show the full price before they press Order

Baymard's survey of shoppers who abandoned an order found that 40% left because extra costs such as shipping were too high, 17% because the checkout was too long or complicated, and 12% because they could not see the total cost upfront. These are US numbers, but the lesson carries over to COD with one extra twist: a buyer who meets a surprise delivery charge on the rider's slip can simply refuse the parcel, and you pay delivery both ways.

  • Put the delivery charge on the product page, not only inside the form.
  • If you offer free delivery above an amount, state the exact amount, for example: Free delivery on orders above Rs 3,000.
  • If you sell bundles, show the saving in rupees, not only as a percentage.
  • Repeat the final total in your WhatsApp confirmation message so it matches exactly what the rider will ask for.

Example: what a cleaner form is worth in rupees

Example only, with assumed numbers. Take a store that gets 1,000 COD orders a month. Using OrderNation's funnel, about 630 get shipped and about 490 bring back cash, so about 140 shipped parcels fail.

LineBeforeAfter (Example)
COD orders placed1,0001,000
Shipped630630
Failed after shipping (RTO)140120
Assumed cost per failed parcel (two-way delivery and packing)Rs 350Rs 350
Monthly cost of failed parcelsRs 49,000Rs 42,000

In this Example, if correct phone numbers, findable addresses and a clear total prevent 20 of the 140 failed parcels, the store saves Rs 7,000 a month on delivery and packing alone. That is before counting products that come back damaged and the ad money already spent to win those orders. Put your own courier charges and order count into the same table to see your own number.

To know whether the change worked, compare your return rate by city and by courier for the month before and the month after. RabbitROI shows RTO rates by courier, city and product, but a simple sheet of booked versus delivered parcels per city does the same job.

Common COD form mistakes Pakistani stores make

  • Using Shopify's default checkout fields unchanged, including a required postal code and email.
  • Splitting the name into first and last name, which many buyers fill in as Ali and Ali.
  • Letting buyers type the city freely, then fixing spellings by hand at booking time.
  • Accepting any phone number, including 10-digit numbers with a missing digit.
  • Hiding the delivery charge until the last step.
  • Confirming orders by phone call only, when many buyers are quicker to reply on WhatsApp.
  • Never testing the form on a slow mobile connection.

Fix these one at a time, starting with the phone number and city, because those two fields decide whether you can even reach the buyer and book the parcel.

FAQ

Can I offer COD on Shopify in Pakistan without an app?

Yes. Shopify lists Cash on Delivery (COD) as a manual payment method in the payment settings. The default checkout has more fields than a COD buyer needs, which is why many Pakistani stores add a one-page order form.

Should the postal code be required on a COD order form in Pakistan?

No. Pakistani postal codes have 5 digits, but many buyers do not know theirs and couriers book by city and address. Make it optional or hide it.

What is the correct format for a Pakistani mobile number on a form?

03XX-XXXXXXX, which is 11 digits when typed with the leading 0. Convert +92 numbers to this format and reject anything that is not 11 digits starting with 03.

How many fields should a COD order form have?

Six to seven fields the buyer types: name, mobile number, city, address, landmark and quantity, with the WhatsApp number pre-filled. Baymard's research shows a good checkout can work with 7 to 8 fields.

Does a better order form stop all fake orders?

No. It removes orders that fail because of a wrong number, a bad address or a confused buyer. You still need to confirm orders before dispatch, for example on WhatsApp.
